Our Story

Penner Family on their farm in Steinbach Manitoba

SINCE 1954

We’re the Penner family, and life here on the farm is a mix of beauty and chaos. Cows calving at 2 a.m., kids leaving boots in the doorway, suppers that sometimes get eaten standing at the kitchen island… and yet, we wouldn’t trade it.

Farming has been in our family for over 65 years. What started with just eleven cows has grown into something much bigger—but the heartbeat is still the same: do the work with gratitude, raise good food, and make room at the table for others.

HOW WE RAISE THEM

They graze until about 15 months old, then we slowly transition them to a custom 7-ingredient feed mix (designed with a nutritionist, not just guesswork).

It’s not glamorous work. There are early mornings, frozen waterers in winter, and mud up to our knees come spring. But that’s the real life of farming—and it shows up in the taste of beef that’s been raised with patience and intention.

Farm Beef

This is the weeknight hero—the ground beef that turns into tacos after ball practice, or the roast that fills the house with the smell of home on a cold Manitoba night. It’s honest, hearty, everyday beef you can count on.

Wagyu Cross

This is the “wow” beef. It’s rich, buttery, and makes an ordinary Tuesday night feel like an anniversary dinner. Perfect when you want to slow down and actually savour every bite.

Community

We know what it’s like to be busy, stretched thin, and still wanting to feed your people well. That’s why this matters to us—because mealtime is where we catch up on the day, laugh about the funny stuff that happened, or sometimes just sit quietly and breathe.

MASTER BREEDER

Winning the Master Breeder Award from the Holstein Association of Canada is one of the highest honours a Canadian dairy breeder can achieve — and for the Penner family, it’s more than just a plaque on the wall. It represents decades of dedication, careful genetics, and deep respect for the animals in their care.

This award recognizes not only excellence in breeding and herd management but also a true commitment to raising healthy, well-balanced cattle.

That same care and precision flow directly into the beef they raise today. The Penner family’s experience with Holsteins has shaped their eye for detail — from the health of their herd to the nutrition and environment that produce exceptional flavour and tenderness. Whether it’s their farm-raised beef or their Wagyu-Holstein cross cattle, every animal is raised with the same integrity and attention to quality that earned them the title of Master Breeder.

It’s a legacy of excellence you can truly taste.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Great question! Wagyu originated in Japan, but today farmers around the world raise Wagyu cattle. At Benner Beef, we raise Holstein cattle crossed with Wagyu to bring you that signature buttery marbling and incredible flavour—raised right here in Manitoba.

  • Our cows are fed grass continuously (in the form of silage and alfalfa) and supplemented when necessary. The supplements we use are canola meal and protein pellets. For finishing, we use a carefully balanced feed mix of silage, corn, and canola meal to bring out the best flavour and marbling.

  • Nope. Never. We don’t use growth hormones at Benner Beef.

  • Only if absolutely necessary—for example, if a calf is sick in its first few months of life. Healthy animals are our top priority, and we use antibiotics sparingly and responsibly.

  • No, we aren’t certified organic. We focus on producing the highest quality beef we can by growing excellent hay and feed. To keep our crops healthy, we spray them once a year, following recommended guidelines, so our cattle have the best possible nutrition.

  • Our butcher tells us the regular beef is close to an 80/20 lean-to-fat ratio. Wagyu ground beef will naturally be less lean, since Wagyu cattle are more marbled and finish with higher fat content—that’s where all that flavour comes from!

  • Yes. All of our beef is processed at a provincially inspected facility, so you can be confident in the safety and quality of every cut.

  • Our ground beef comes in vacuum-sealed flat packs—easy to stack in your freezer and simple to thaw for quick meals. Steaks and roasts are also vacuum-sealed for freshness and convenience.

  • Yes, you can! You can order half or whole animals, cut and wrapped to your specifications. It’s a great way to fill your freezer and save.
